About Tempy
Tempy is a tiny rural locality in Victoria's Mallee region, situated approximately 90 kilometres south of Mildura and close to the township of Ouyen. Covering over 453 square kilometres of flat, semi-arid Mallee scrubland and cleared farmland, it had a population of just 62 at the 2021 census. The locality takes its name from a historical railway siding established after the arrival of the Serviceton–Murrayville rail line, with the post office opening in July 1910.
Tempy's character is defined by its vast open landscapes, cereal grain cropping and sheep grazing properties that stretch to the horizon. The nearest service town is Ouyen (~25 km), which provides fuel, groceries, schooling and medical facilities. Life here revolves around the land — farming families, seasonal workers and the occasional traveller passing through on the Mallee Highway make up the community. It suits those seeking genuine rural solitude in one of Victoria's most remote corners.
Tempy falls under postcode 3489 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
