About Tieri
Tieri is a purpose-built coal mining town in Queensland's Central Highlands, located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Emerald and 120 kilometres west of Biloela. Established in 1979 to house workers for the Oaky Creek Coal Mine (operated by Glencore), the town has a population of around 732 residents and was comprehensively planned with residential, recreational, and service infrastructure to support a self-sufficient community. It lies within the Central Highlands Regional Council, the Gregory state electorate, and the Flynn federal electorate.
Tieri offers a well-maintained and surprisingly well-serviced environment for a remote outback town, with facilities including a primary school, medical centre, supermarket, hotel, sporting clubs, swimming pool, and green parklands — all funded over the decades by the adjacent mining operation. The community has a strong, tight-knit character common to Queensland's resource towns, with residents enjoying high incomes from mining employment balanced against the isolation of central Queensland. Emerald is the nearest significant regional centre for extended shopping, secondary schooling, and hospital services, approximately two hours by road.
Tieri falls under postcode 4709 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
