About Torrens Island
Torrens Island is an uninhabited industrial island located in the Port River estuary north of Port Adelaide, within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield in South Australia. The island covers approximately 7.6 square kilometres and has been dominated by the Torrens Island Power Station since the 1960s, one of South Australia's most significant electricity generation sites operated by AGL Energy. It has no permanent residential population and is effectively restricted to industrial and environmental management uses. The island is historically significant as the site of a World War I internment camp that held up to 400 men of German and Austro-Hungarian background.
Torrens Island is not a residential suburb and offers no lifestyle amenities, housing, or public access. The island is home to the Barker Inlet Wetlands, a significant conservation area within the greater Port Adelaide estuary that supports a diverse range of migratory and resident waterbirds. Access is restricted to authorised personnel and AGL staff. The nearby Port Adelaide and LeFevre Peninsula communities border the island, and the broader Port River area is popular with kayakers and wildlife enthusiasts who explore the wetlands from public boat ramps.
Torrens Island falls under postcode 5015 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Port Adelaide electorate.
