About Towong
Towong is a small rural locality in the Shire of Towong, situated on the banks of the Murray River in northeast Victoria, approximately 15 kilometres east of Corryong and close to the New South Wales border. With a population of around 143 residents spread across 77 square kilometres, it is a sparsely settled farming and grazing community in the Upper Murray region. The area is characterised by rolling river flats, eucalypt woodland, and the tranquil reach of the Murray — giving it a distinctly remote, pastoral feel reminiscent of 19th-century rural Victoria.
Towong is home to the historic Towong Turf Club, one of the oldest in regional Victoria, hosting thoroughbred racing since 1871. The club still holds two meetings per year — the Towong Cup in early March and the Squizzy Taylor Dash in late December — drawing visitors from across the Snowy Mountains and Upper Murray regions. The locality appeals to those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle, with Corryong providing the nearest schools, supermarkets, and services, while Albury-Wodonga is around 130 kilometres to the west for major retail and medical needs.
Towong falls under postcode 3707 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
