About Trowutta
Trowutta is a quiet rural locality in the Circular Head Council area of north-west Tasmania, situated approximately 29 kilometres south of the regional town of Smithton. Gazetted in 1962, the locality is bounded by the Arthur River to the south and east and the Duck River to the north, placing it at the heart of the Tarkine region's farm and forest mosaic. The 2016 census recorded a population of just 92 residents, reflecting the highly rural nature of the area. Dairy farming, beef cattle grazing and timber have historically underpinned the local economy.
Trowutta is home to the remarkable Trowutta Arch, a natural rock arch set within the surrounding forest and a popular attraction for visitors exploring the Tarkine wilderness. The Arthur Pieman Conservation Area and extensive native forests nearby offer world-class wilderness experiences including four-wheel driving, bushwalking and fishing along pristine rivers. The community is tight-knit, with residents relying on Smithton for schooling, shopping and medical services. It is a place for those who value serenity, wide open spaces and one of Australia's last great temperate rainforests on their doorstep.
Trowutta falls under postcode 7330 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
