Tunnel is a small rural locality in north-east Tasmania, situated approximately 36 kilometres north of Launceston within the Launceston local government area. Covering just over 13 square kilometres of quiet farming country, the locality takes its unusual name from a historic 700-metre railway tunnel constructed between 1885 and 1888 as part of the North-Eastern Line connecting Launceston to Scottsdale. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 92 residents across 26 dwellings, reflecting its character as a dispersed rural community. Tunnel sits a few kilometres beyond Lilydale, tucked into the rolling hills of Tasmania's north-east.

The abandoned railway tunnel — the only significant railway tunnel in Tasmania — draws visitors with an interest in the state's industrial heritage, and the nearby Lilydale Falls Reserve offers scenic walks and picnic areas just a short drive away. The locality itself is quiet and largely agricultural, with residents valuing the peaceful rural setting within reasonable reach of Launceston's services, schools, and shops. There are no commercial facilities within Tunnel; Lilydale (a few kilometres south) provides a small general store, while Launceston meets all major needs. The combination of historic curiosity and restful countryside gives Tunnel a niche appeal among those seeking a rural lifestyle close to a regional city.
