Upper Bingara is a small rural locality in the Gwydir local government area of northern New South Wales, situated in the foothills country northwest of the town of Bingara. The locality encompasses approximately 85 square kilometres of farming and grazing land along the upper reaches of the Gwydir River catchment. With a population of just 21 people at the 2021 Census, Upper Bingara is one of the most sparsely settled localities in the New England North West region.
The landscape around Upper Bingara is characterised by dry sclerophyll bushland, rocky outcrops, and open grazing paddocks typical of the New England slopes and tablelands. Farming families in the area primarily raise livestock and cultivate crops suited to the semi-arid climate.
