About Urana
Urana is a small historic town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, located 561 km south-west of Sydney and approximately 111 km from Wagga Wagga, within the Federation Council local government area. With a population of 329 at the 2021 census, the town sits at 125 m elevation on the Riverina plain, flanked by Lake Urana and the Lake Urana Nature Reserve to the west, and the smaller Lake Uranagong to the east. The name Urana is believed to derive from the Wiradjuri word for a temporary shelter, reflecting the area's deep Indigenous heritage.
Urana's economy is anchored in sheep grazing, wheat growing, and broader grain agriculture — industries that have shaped the district since European settlement in the 1850s. The town offers a primary school, hotel, general store, and community hall, providing a nucleus of services for surrounding farming properties. History buffs will appreciate the town's colonial-era connections, including a notorious encounter with bushranger Dan Morgan in 1863, and a well-preserved built heritage that speaks to its role as the former administrative centre of Urana Shire.
Urana falls under postcode 2645 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wagga Wagga electorate.
