About Victoria River
Victoria River is a vast remote locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 450 kilometres south of Darwin and 240 kilometres south of Katherine within the Victoria Daly Region local government area. Covering an extraordinary 27,278 square kilometres of tropical savanna and pastoral country, the locality encompasses several large cattle stations including Victoria River Downs, one of Australia's most significant pastoral leases. With a recorded population of 126 in the 2021 Census, Victoria River has one of the lowest population densities of any locality in Australia.
The locality's character is defined by its dramatic outback landscape — rugged sandstone gorges, ancient river systems, and vast cattle station country that has shaped the region since the 1880s. The Victoria River itself, named by Captains Wickham and Stokes of HMS Beagle in 1839 after Queen Victoria, flows through the area from south to north. The Buchanan Highway and Buntine Highway traverse the locality, connecting it to the Stuart Highway and the Victoria Highway. Life here revolves around pastoral work, station culture, and the extraordinary natural environment of the Northern Territory's dry-season landscape.
Victoria River falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
