About Wallaroo
Wallaroo is an extremely remote rural locality in central Queensland, straddling the boundary of the Central Highlands Region and the Aboriginal Shire of Woorabinda. Located approximately 133 kilometres west-south-west of Rockhampton, the locality covers around 241 square kilometres of open grazing country in the Fitzroy Basin. The 2021 census recorded a population of just 13 people, reflecting its character as sparse cattle station country with almost no permanent settlement.
The locality offers no urban services or facilities, with the nearest towns being Duaringa (~19 km east) and Dingo (~19 km west) for basic supplies, and Rockhampton for full services. The surrounding landscape is typical of Queensland's Central Highlands — flat to gently rolling open woodland and grassland used predominantly for beef cattle grazing. The Aboriginal Shire of Woorabinda, which shares part of this locality's boundary to the north, adds cultural significance to the wider region.
Wallaroo falls under postcode 4702 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Rockhampton electorate.
