About Warumungu
Warumungu is a vast remote locality in the Northern Territory of Australia, situated within the Victoria Daly local government area approximately 450 kilometres south of Darwin in the Katherine region. Covering an immense 39,870 square kilometres of tropical savanna, open woodland, and outback pastoral country, it is one of the largest and most sparsely settled localities in Australia. With just 146 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, population density is extraordinarily low, and life here is defined by the rhythms of remote pastoral stations and the vast scale of the NT landscape.
The locality encompasses the iconic Northern Territory scenery of tropical woodland savanna, red earth plains, and floodplain country characteristic of the Victoria River district. There are no shops, schools, or urban services within the locality itself; Katherine, the regional service hub of the NT's Top End south, is the nearest substantial town and provides access to hospitals, schools, supermarkets, and road connections. Warumungu is entirely car and road dependent, with only the unsealed pastoral access roads and the broader Stuart and Victoria Highway network connecting this remote country to the outside world.
Warumungu falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
