About Weegena
Weegena is a small rural locality in Tasmania's north-west interior, situated within the Meander Valley Council area approximately 16 kilometres north-west of Deloraine and around 40 kilometres south of Devonport. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 89 residents across a substantial land area of nearly 40 square kilometres, underlining its character as a sparsely settled farming district. The locality name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'campfire' or 'fireplace', and the area was previously known as Blackmore before being gazetted as Weegena in the 1960s.
Weegena is a quiet agricultural community set among rolling hills and river flats, with properties fronting the Mersey River featuring rich alluvial soils suited to a range of farming pursuits. The area is home to mixed farming operations including grazing and cropping, and some properties have embraced sustainable farming practices. The landscape offers opportunities for fishing, bushwalking, and birdwatching. The nearby town of Deloraine provides the principal commercial hub for the area, with supermarkets, schools, medical services, and community facilities; Devonport, with its Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal, is accessible within about 40 minutes by car.
Weegena falls under postcode 7304 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
