About Westwood
Westwood is a rural locality in the Meander Valley Council area of northern Tasmania, located approximately 26 kilometres south-west of Launceston. Covering a substantial 85 square kilometres, the locality is bounded by the Meander River to the south-west and the South Esk River to the east, giving it a distinctive river-framed agricultural character. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 88 residents, typical of the sparse settlement pattern across the Meander Valley pastoral hinterland.
The Westwood district is part of the fertile Meander Valley, long established as one of Tasmania's most productive agricultural regions, with pastoral farming, cropping and some forestry activity shaping the landscape. The township of Deloraine, approximately 25 kilometres west, serves as the main regional service centre and is known for its heritage streetscapes, arts community and the annual SILK and Fibre Festival. Launceston, Tasmania's second-largest city with comprehensive retail, healthcare and education services, is accessible within a 30-minute drive, making Westwood a practical choice for those seeking rural acreage within reach of a major centre.
Westwood falls under postcode 7292 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
