About Whetstone
Whetstone is a sparse rural locality in the Goondiwindi Region of southern Queensland, situated approximately 16 kilometres south-west of Inglewood and around 76 kilometres north-east of Goondiwindi. The locality covers a vast 555 square kilometres of the Granite and Traprock country of south-western Queensland, characterised by undulating terrain shaped by ancient granitic intrusions and basaltic flows. With a 2021 Census population of just 70 residents spread across around 24 dwellings, Whetstone is one of the most thinly settled localities in the region.
Land use in Whetstone is dominated by mixed farming and grazing, consistent with the broader agricultural character of the Goondiwindi Region's grain belt and cattle country. The locality is served by the South Western railway line and the Cunningham Highway, both of which pass through linking Inglewood to the east with Yelarbon to the south-west. Residents depend on Inglewood for basic services including a school and general store, while Goondiwindi — around 76 kilometres to the south-west — provides a fuller range of retail, health, and community services for those in the area.
Whetstone falls under postcode 4387 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
