About Wilberforce

Wilberforce is a historic rural locality in the City of Hawkesbury, situated on the western bank of the Hawkesbury River approximately 62 kilometres north-west of Sydney CBD. It is one of five original townships established by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810, known collectively as the Macquarie Towns, and was named after British abolitionist William Wilberforce. With a population of around 2,957 at the 2021 census, the community is predominantly Australian-born with a strong Anglo-Celtic heritage and a median age of 39. The area has retained much of its rural and historic character, sitting at the edge of Greater Sydney's north-western fringe amid farmland and floodplains.

Wilberforce offers a peaceful semi-rural lifestyle enriched by an extraordinary depth of colonial history, with multiple State Heritage-listed sites within the locality. Highlights include the Australiana Pioneer Village on Rose Street, the historic St John's Anglican Church and Macquarie Schoolhouse, Wilberforce Cemetery, and Stannix Park House. The surrounding Hawkesbury River provides opportunities for fishing, boating and bushwalking, and the nearby town of Windsor offers shopping, dining and services. Families and lifestyle-seekers are drawn to Wilberforce for its large blocks, community spirit and easy access to both the Hawkesbury's natural landscapes and western Sydney.

Wilberforce falls under postcode 2756 and is governed by Hawkesbury Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hawkesbury electorate.
