About Wiluna
Wiluna is a remote outback town in Western Australia's Goldfields-Esperance region, situated at the edge of the Western Desert approximately 947 kilometres north-east of Perth and 182 kilometres east of Meekatharra. With a population of approximately 521 and covering an extraordinary area of nearly 36,000 square kilometres, it is one of Australia's most remote inhabited localities. The town sits at an elevation of 521 metres and serves as the gateway to the Canning Stock Route and the Gunbarrel Highway, two of Australia's most iconic outback tracks. The Shire of Wiluna is the local governing body.
Wiluna serves as the service centre for the Martu people, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the region, as well as workers at the nearby Wiluna Gold Mine and pastoral station employees. The town has a general store, petrol station, caravan park, public swimming pool, school, and health clinic, along with the Shire of Wiluna administration centre (converted from the historic Club Hotel). The climate is hot and arid, with annual rainfall of just 258mm and temperatures reaching 38°C in summer. Adventure seekers use Wiluna as the departure point for the legendary Canning Stock Route, one of the world's great 4WD journeys.
Wiluna falls under postcode 6646 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
