About Windorah
Windorah is a remote outback town in the Channel Country of western Queensland, situated beside Cooper Creek approximately 1,300 kilometres west of Brisbane. With a population of just 104 residents at the 2021 Census, it is one of Queensland's smallest and most isolated communities, covering a vast area of over 8,800 square kilometres. The town's name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of large fish', reflecting its connection to the waterways that have sustained life in this arid landscape for thousands of years.
Windorah is a gateway to the Channel Country and is known for its striking red sand dunes, expansive outback scenery, and the Cooper Creek waterhole — a popular spot for fishing and birdwatching. Visitors can explore the Whitula Gate Museum, which features relics from the Rabbit Board era, and a heritage walk past the original post office, old police station, and historic courthouse. The town is served by Windorah State School and has basic amenities, with the local hotel serving as a social hub. Windorah attracts travellers seeking an authentic outback experience, particularly during the cooler months from April to October.
Windorah falls under postcode 4481 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
