About Eromanga
Eromanga is an outback locality in the Shire of Quilpie, southwestern Queensland, situated approximately 1,062 kilometres west-northwest of Brisbane. With a 2021 census population of just 98 people, it is one of Australia's most remote and sparsely populated localities, covering a vast area of over 28,000 square kilometres. The community is anchored by the pastoral and petroleum industries, with oil extraction rigs a defining feature of the surrounding landscape. Eromanga's terrain is classic Queensland outback — flat, arid, and expansive under a wide open sky.
Life in Eromanga revolves around the resilient outback community spirit typical of far southwest Queensland. The town is home to the Eromanga Natural History Museum, notable for significant dinosaur fossil discoveries including bones of the largest dinosaur ever found in Australia. Most supplies and services require a trip to Quilpie, approximately 106 kilometres to the east. The surrounding Channel Country pastoral stations support a tight-knit community of station workers and their families.
Eromanga falls under postcode 4480 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
