About Adavale
Adavale is a remote outback locality in the Quilpie Shire, south-west Queensland, situated approximately 931 kilometres west of Brisbane and around 100 kilometres north-east of Quilpie. Covering more than 21,000 square kilometres of Mitchell grass and mulga country, it is one of Queensland's most isolated communities. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 72 residents in the locality, reflecting Adavale's long decline from its late-19th-century prominence as an administrative centre — a decline that accelerated when the Western railway bypassed it in favour of Quilpie in 1917.
Despite its tiny size, Adavale punches well above its weight as an outback tourism destination, drawing visitors to the iconic Adavale Pub and General Store, the outdoor mini museum, and the Police Hut Museum in the historic Shire Hall grounds. The area is the gateway to Hell Hole Gorge National Park and Mariala National Park, offering 4WD touring, bushwalking, birdwatching, and camping. Each year the Muster in the Mulga — a celebrated outback rodeo, gymkhana, and bikekhana — draws crowds from across Queensland, cementing Adavale's reputation as a spirited bush community.
Adavale falls under postcode 4474 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
