About Wivenhoe Pocket
Wivenhoe Pocket is a rural locality in the Somerset Region of south-east Queensland, positioned approximately 31 kilometres north-north-west of Ipswich and 68 kilometres west of Brisbane, sharing boundaries with the Lake Wivenhoe locality. The 2021 census recorded a population of 417 across 20.7 square kilometres. The suburb takes its name from a historic pastoral run managed by Edmund Blucher Uhr, who named it after the town of Wivenhoe in Essex, England.
Wivenhoe Pocket sits within the catchment of Lake Wivenhoe, South-East Queensland largest water storage reservoir and a popular destination for sailing, fishing, and bushwalking. The surrounding terrain is characterised by rolling hills, dry eucalypt bush, and small rural properties. Residents are drawn by the peaceful semi-rural lifestyle, scenic proximity to the lake, and relative accessibility to Ipswich (30 min) and Brisbane (under an hour by car), making it a popular escape from suburban life while remaining within commuting range.
Wivenhoe Pocket falls under postcode 4306 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Scenic Rim electorate.
