About Womboota
Womboota is a remote rural locality in the Riverina region of New South Wales, situated approximately 26 kilometres north of Moama and within the Murray River Council local government area. Covering a vast 262 square kilometres of flat Murray plains, it is one of the most sparsely settled localities in the region, with a population of just 90 recorded in the 2021 Census. The area is characterised by sweeping plains, red gum forests, and an intricate network of Murray River channels and backwaters that almost entirely surround the locality.
Agriculture is the backbone of life in Womboota, with the rich alluvial soils and proximity to the Murray River supporting dryland cropping, sheep and cattle grazing, and irrigation farming. The town once had a railway station on the Balranald branch line, which closed in the mid-twentieth century, and a post office that operated from 1899 to 1979 — reminders of a more active past. Today, residents rely on Moama and the twin border city of Echuca across the Murray River in Victoria for services, shopping, and community facilities.
Womboota falls under postcode 2731 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
