About Woolnorth
Woolnorth — also officially known as Woolnorth/Temdudheker — is a remote rural locality at the far north-western tip of Tasmania, within the Circular Head Council area. The locality lies approximately 37 kilometres north-west of Smithton and encompasses some 360 square kilometres of coastline, farmland, and wind energy infrastructure along the Bass Strait. With a 2021 Census population of 161, Woolnorth is one of Australia's most sparsely settled and historically significant pastoral properties.
The Woolnorth property was established in 1827 by the Van Diemen's Land Company and today operates Australasia's largest dairy enterprise alongside the Woolnorth Wind Farm — comprising the Bluff Point and Studland Bay installations commissioned in 2002–04. Cape Grim, on the Woolnorth peninsula, is home to the internationally recognised Baseline Air Pollution Station, monitoring some of the world's cleanest air. Guided tours of the property offer visitors an extraordinary experience combining colonial history, renewable energy, and dramatic coastal scenery on the edge of the Southern Ocean.
Woolnorth falls under postcode 7330 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
