About Wujal Wujal
Wujal Wujal is a small Aboriginal community on the Far North Queensland coast, located approximately 72 kilometres south of Cooktown along the Bloomfield Track in the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire. The name 'Wujal Wujal' is a Kuku-Yalanji clan word meaning 'many falls', referencing the sacred waterfalls that define the local landscape. With a 2021 Census population of 282 residents across just under 12 square kilometres, it is a compact but culturally significant community embedded within the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest and coastal environment.
The community is governed by the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council, which manages essential services for residents. The Bloomfield River flows through the area, and the surrounding rainforest and waterfalls attract visitors exploring Cape Tribulation and the Daintree region. Social housing makes up a significant portion of dwellings, with the community predominantly serving resident Kuku-Yalanji traditional owners. Access is via the Bloomfield Track, which requires a four-wheel drive vehicle and is subject to seasonal road closures.
Wujal Wujal falls under postcode 4895 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
