About Yagoonya
Yagoonya is an extremely remote pastoral locality in Far North Queensland, located in the Cape York Peninsula region with coordinates placing it approximately 250 km north-west of Cairns. The locality encompasses a vast 11,028 square kilometres of tropical savanna woodland, with a population of only around 20 people recorded in the 2021 Census. The area lies within the electorate of Leichhardt and forms part of Queensland's sparsely populated Gulf Country.
Life in Yagoonya is defined by the rhythms of remote outback pastoral farming, the Wet and Dry seasons, and the vast distances typical of Cape York Peninsula. The region offers extraordinary wildlife including saltwater crocodiles, wallabies, and abundant birdlife, as well as breathtaking savanna landscapes. Access is via unsealed roads that may be impassable during the Wet season, and all supplies and services are sourced from distant regional centres.
