About Yarraden
Yarraden is an extremely remote coastal rural locality on the eastern side of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland's Shire of Cook, situated about 447 kilometres north-northwest of Cairns and 278 kilometres northwest of Cooktown. Covering an enormous 11,427 km², the locality borders the Coral Sea to the east, with the Great Dividing Range passing through it. At the 2021 census Yarraden had a population of just 53 people, reflecting its character as a sparsely settled pastoral and wilderness area.
Yarraden is defined by vast open landscapes of savannah woodland, wetlands, and coastal terrain, making it a destination for adventurous four-wheel-drivers, fishing enthusiasts, and those seeking one of Australia's most remote frontiers. The locality lies within the broader Cape York region — renowned for its spectacular biodiversity, migratory bird populations, and connections to Indigenous country. Access is extremely limited, typically requiring a high-clearance 4WD via unsealed roads, and services are minimal.
Yarraden falls under postcode 4892 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
