About Yarralin
Yarralin (also known as Lingara) is a remote Aboriginal community located in the Victoria River District of the Northern Territory, approximately 450 kilometres south-west of Katherine and 400 kilometres south of Darwin. The community covers around 150 square kilometres of rugged savanna landscape on the traditional country of the Ngarinyman and Bilinara peoples. With a population of approximately 280 residents, Yarralin is one of the larger outstations in the Judbarra / Gregory National Park corridor. Social housing accounts for a significant portion of dwellings, reflecting its status as a government-supported remote community.
Life in Yarralin is deeply connected to the land, culture, and traditions of its Indigenous custodians. The community has a school, health clinic, and basic community store, with residents maintaining strong ties to ceremonial life and country. The nearby Victoria River and Judbarra / Gregory National Park offer spectacular scenery and are important to local cultural heritage. Access to Yarralin is via the Buchanan Highway, a mostly unsealed road that can become impassable during the wet season (October to April). The community plays an important role in land management and ranger programs across the region.
