About Yarwun
Yarwun is a rural and industrial locality in the Gladstone Region of central Queensland, situated approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone city. Covering around 50 square kilometres, the locality recorded a population of 89 residents in the 2021 Census, though its working population is far larger due to its major industrial operations. Yarwun is located within the federal electorate of Flynn and the state electorate of Gladstone.
The locality is dominated by large-scale heavy industry, most notably the Rio Tinto Yarwun alumina refinery — one of Australia's largest, capable of producing 3.4 million tonnes of alumina per year — and the Orica ammonium nitrate plant. The Yarwun Industrial Estate is a major 1,300-hectare precinct strategically located with access to rail, gas, power, and the Port of Gladstone. The North Coast railway line passes through the locality, with branch lines servicing industrial sites. Residents and workers access services in Gladstone city, which offers a full range of shopping, schools, and healthcare.
