About Zuytdorp
Zuytdorp is a vast, uninhabited coastal locality in the Mid West region of Western Australia, covering over 1,700 square kilometres of remote coastal cliff-tops along the Indian Ocean. The locality takes its name from the Dutch VOC trading vessel Zuytdorp, which was wrecked on the sheer limestone cliffs here in 1712 — one of Australia's most famous and isolated historic shipwrecks. With no permanent population, Zuytdorp is a statistical locality that encompasses part of the rugged Zuytdorp Cliffs, recognised as some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Australia.
Access to the Zuytdorp area is extremely limited, with no sealed roads reaching the cliffs, making the locality accessible only to experienced four-wheel-drive travellers. The nearest service centre is Kalbarri, approximately 60 kilometres to the south, which offers accommodation, fuel, food and tourist facilities. The locality is prized by adventurers, historians and naturalists for its untouched wildflower-covered hinterland, breeding colonies of seabirds, and the haunting legacy of the Zuytdorp shipwreck site.
Zuytdorp falls under postcode 6536 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
