About Amoonguna
Amoonguna, also known by its Arrernte name Imengkwerne, is an Aboriginal community located approximately 15 kilometres south-east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, within the Rodinga Ward of MacDonnell Regional Council. With a population of around 229 residents, the community is one of the closest outstations to Alice Springs, providing a connection between traditional land and the services available in town. Social housing makes up a significant proportion of the local dwelling stock, reflecting the community's status as a serviced Aboriginal locality under the MacDonnell Regional Council.
Amoonguna sits in the striking East MacDonnell Ranges landscape, characterised by red rock formations, spinifex, and eucalypt woodlands typical of Central Australia. The community is home to multiple Aboriginal language groups and maintains strong cultural connections to the surrounding country. Residents access schools, health clinics, and shopping primarily through Alice Springs, which is a short drive via the Stuart Highway corridor, making Amoonguna one of the more connected remote communities in the region.
