About Areyonga
Areyonga, known in Pitjantjatjara as Utju, is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory located approximately 220 kilometres west of Alice Springs within the MacDonnell Region. Established in the 1920s, the community had a population of around 236 at the 2021 Census and is situated amid the dramatic red-rock landscape of the Western MacDonnell Ranges. It remains one of the more isolated Indigenous communities in the Territory, accessible via unsealed roads.
The community of Areyonga has a strong connection to traditional Anangu culture and the surrounding landscape, which holds deep spiritual significance. Essential services such as a school, health clinic and community store provide for residents' basic needs. The area is surrounded by stunning desert scenery, and the nearby Finke Gorge National Park and Palm Valley are significant natural and cultural landmarks in the region.
Areyonga falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
