About Buxton
Buxton is a small fishing town and rural locality in Queensland's Wide Bay–Burnett region, set on the banks of the Burrum River at the southern end of the former Isis Shire. Located approximately 20 kilometres off the Bruce Highway and upstream from Burrum Heads and Walkers Point, Buxton covers around 74 square kilometres. The population reached 507 in the 2021 census — growth of 17.9 per cent since 2016 — with the predominant age group being 60–69 years, reflecting the area's strong appeal to retirees and sea-changers. Most households are childless couples in owner-occupied dwellings.
Buxton's primary attraction is its peaceful riverside setting on the Burrum River, making it popular with recreational fishers, boaters, and nature lovers. The broader area is characterised by low-density residential and rural-residential properties, with a community feel centred on outdoor lifestyle activities. Childers and Maryborough provide the nearest larger service centres for shopping, medical care, and schooling. The surrounding Burrum Coast National Park and nearby Burrum Heads beach offer excellent recreational opportunities, and the area is well-regarded for its mud crabbing and bream fishing.
Buxton falls under postcode 4660 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Maryborough electorate.
