About Conara
Conara is a small historic rural locality in central Tasmania, situated approximately 51 kilometres south of Launceston and 116 kilometres north of Hobart within the Northern Midlands Council area. Set at an elevation of 233 metres in the Central LGA region, Conara covers around 242 square kilometres of Midlands farmland along the South Esk River corridor. With a 2021 Census population of 127, it is a sparsely settled locality that carries a rich history as a key junction point on Tasmania's early coaching and rail networks.
Conara's story stretches back to the early 1800s, when a land grant to James and Catherine Smith established the first settlement, then known as 'The Corner' or 'Willis' Corner'. The Corners Inn, built in 1850 to serve travellers on the Hobart-Launceston coach route, gave the locality its name and became famous as 'The Disappearing House' due to its curious appearance when viewed from the south. When the railways arrived in the 1880s, Conara Junction became an important social and transport hub, though its schools, post office, and shops have since closed. Today Conara is a quiet rural locality where agriculture and open Midlands landscapes define the character, with Campbell Town a short drive away for services.
Conara falls under postcode 7211 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
