About Epping Forest
Epping Forest is a rural locality in the Northern Midlands Council area of central Tasmania, situated along the Midland Highway approximately 38 kilometres south-east of Longford and midway between Launceston and Hobart. With a 2021 Census population of 87 residents, the locality spans a large area of 136.39 square kilometres of dry forest and open grassland. The area sits within a recognised biodiversity hotspot in the Tasmanian Northern Midlands Bioregion.
The locality has a colourful history, once known as a feared haunt of bushrangers during Tasmania's convict era, and several heritage buildings from that period remain standing today. Modern-day Epping Forest is centred on a roadhouse and service station on the Midland Highway, providing a rest stop for travellers between Launceston and Hobart. The intercity bus route 700 connecting Launceston and Hobart stops at the service station car park, near the Truckies Memorial.
Epping Forest falls under postcode 7211 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
