About Lake Leake
Lake Leake is a small township and man-made reservoir in the eastern midlands of Tasmania, located approximately 100 km north-east of Hobart and 95 km south-east of Launceston. The locality spans 408 km² and is split between the Northern Midlands Council and Glamorgan-Spring Bay Council. With a 2021 census population of 59, it is one of Tasmania's most sparsely inhabited named places. The area carries deep Aboriginal heritage — known as kunawi in palawa kani — and was traditionally a meeting place for the Peenrymairmemener clan of the North Midlands nation.
Lake Leake is renowned across Tasmania for its world-class freshwater fishing, with the reservoir holding 22 gigalitres and supporting populations of brook, brown, and rainbow trout. Uniquely, the village sits on land owned by the Northern Midlands Council, and inhabitants must hold a licence and are restricted in how many days per year they can reside there, giving it the character of a semi-permanent angler's retreat. The surrounding midlands landscape is open grazing country with sweeping views, ideal for those seeking deep solitude. Nearby Lake Yaleena provides further fishing and cabin accommodation for visitors.
Lake Leake falls under postcode 7210 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
