About Ross
Ross is one of Tasmania's best-preserved Georgian villages, located on the Macquarie River in the Midlands, 78 kilometres south of Launceston and 117 kilometres north of Hobart. With a population of 410 at the 2021 census across 681 square kilometres, the village was established in 1812 and is listed on the Register of the National Estate. Sitting at 186 metres elevation on the Heritage Highway, Ross is renowned for its sandstone architecture, including the famous Ross Bridge (1836), one of the oldest bridges in Australia.
Ross offers a quintessential Tasmanian heritage village experience, with beautifully preserved sandstone buildings, antique shops, the Tasmanian Wool Centre, and charming cafés. The village's crossroads is famously marked by four corners representing Temptation (the pub), Salvation (the church), Recreation (the town hall), and Damnation (the gaol). It attracts heritage tourists, history buffs, and those seeking a peaceful rural lifestyle in one of Australia's most intact colonial villages.
