About Daly River
Daly River is a remote community and locality in the Victoria Daly Region of the Northern Territory, situated approximately 220 kilometres south-west of Darwin on the banks of the Daly River. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 116 people in the Daly River locality, though the broader Nauiyu community (also known as Nauiyu Nambiyu) on the river's northern bank is home to many more residents. The traditional custodians of the land are the Mulluk Mulluk people, with ten different language and cultural groups represented in the area.
Daly River is widely regarded as one of Australia's premier barramundi fishing destinations, attracting recreational anglers from across the country, particularly during the dry season (May to October). The Nauiyu community operates as a largely self-sufficient remote Aboriginal community, with a school, health clinic, store, and community-managed services. The area's natural environment — lush floodplains, monsoon forests, and the iconic Daly River — makes it a spectacular destination for ecotourism and fishing tourism, while the community maintains strong cultural and spiritual ties to the surrounding country.
Daly River falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
