About Dolphin Sands
Dolphin Sands is a small coastal locality on Tasmania's East Coast, situated on a narrow peninsula between Great Oyster Bay and the Moulting Lagoon, approximately 10 kilometres south-east of Swansea in the Glamorgan–Spring Bay local government area. With a permanent population of around 182 residents, the locality is characterised by holiday shacks and permanent homes framed by sweeping ocean views and spectacular beach access. Its remote setting between the pristine waters of Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula makes it a cherished holiday destination.
The lifestyle in Dolphin Sands is centred on outdoor recreation — swimming, fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching in the adjacent Moulting Lagoon Game Reserve, which is internationally recognised as an important habitat for black swans and migratory wading birds. The locality has no commercial services, with residents and holiday visitors travelling to Swansea for shopping and amenities. Unfortunately, Dolphin Sands has been repeatedly impacted by bushfires, with significant home losses recorded in 2009, 2023, and 2025.
Dolphin Sands falls under postcode 7190 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
