About Eskdale
Eskdale is a small historic town in the Shire of Towong in north-eastern Victoria, situated in the Mitta Valley near the confluence of the Mitta Mitta River and Little Snowy Creek, amongst the foothills of Mount Bogong. The town lies approximately 382 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, 60 kilometres south-east of Wodonga, and 39 kilometres south-east of Tallangatta. With a population of 238 at the 2021 Census, Eskdale covers a sweeping 309 square kilometres of alpine foothills, high country valleys, and native bushland in the upper Mitta Mitta catchment.
Despite its small size, Eskdale is well-serviced for a remote high country town, with a supermarket, café, post office, church, primary school, bowling green, and a sports complex shared with the neighbouring town of Mitta Mitta. The Mitta Mitta River is a favourite among anglers and kayakers, while the surrounding Victorian High Country offers access to alpine trails and the slopes of Mount Bogong. The Omeo Highway passes through the town, providing a scenic route linking the alpine region to Wodonga and the Murray.
Eskdale falls under postcode 3701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
