About Shelley
Shelley is a tiny, remote locality in the Upper Murray region of north-eastern Victoria, situated in the foothills of the Australian Alps at an elevation of approximately 781 metres above sea level — making it one of the highest-lying localities in the state. With a population of fewer than 10 residents, it is one of Victoria's smallest and most sparsely settled places, covering a large land area of over 156 square kilometres. The surrounding landscape is characterised by alpine ash forests, rolling hills, and vast pastoral runs, giving the area a raw and rugged character.
Shelley is known for its rich railway heritage; the former Shelley Railway Station, opened in 1916 and closed in 1979, was once the highest railway station in Victoria. Today the area appeals to those seeking deep rural solitude, with farming properties, bushwalking, and wildlife observation among the primary pursuits. Winters are severe, with heavy snowfalls common from May through September, while summers bring crisp mountain air. The nearest service towns are Corryong and Tumbarumba.
Shelley falls under postcode 3701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
