About Mitta Mitta
Mitta Mitta is a remote alpine hamlet in north-east Victoria's Shire of Towong, nestled in the Mitta Mitta Valley at an elevation of 254 metres, approximately 415 kilometres from Melbourne and 93 kilometres south-east of Wodonga. The locality covers a vast 789 square kilometres of mountain and valley country, with a population of 171 at the 2021 Census. Situated on the Omeo Highway along the Mitta Mitta River, the town sits in a picturesque valley close to the iconic Dartmouth Dam, one of Australia's largest reservoirs.
Mitta Mitta is a popular destination for fishing, bushwalking, and outdoor recreation, with the Mitta Mitta River renowned for its trout fishing and the nearby Dartmouth Reservoir attracting boaters and campers from across Victoria. The junction of the Mitta Mitta River and Snowy Creek forms the heart of this small community. The township has limited services — a pub and basic facilities — with the nearest town of Tallangatta (73 km north-west) the closest centre for supplies. Its extreme remoteness and high-country character make it a distinctive and beloved part of Victoria's alpine north-east.
Mitta Mitta falls under postcode 3701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
