About Eveleigh
Eveleigh is an inner southern suburb of Sydney, located approximately 3 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD within the City of Sydney local government area. Historically one of Australia's most significant industrial precincts, Eveleigh was home to the Eveleigh Railway Workshops from the 1880s — a 60-acre complex that once employed over 3,000 workers and manufactured Australia's first steam locomotives. Today the suburb covers just 0.53 km² and had a population of 606 at the 2021 census, with a high proportion of social housing.
Modern Eveleigh has been transformed by urban renewal, with the former railway workshops reimagined as South Eveleigh — a vibrant innovation and technology precinct anchored by the Australian Technology Park. The iconic Carriageworks arts venue on Wilson Street is a major cultural hub hosting markets, performances, and exhibitions. The suburb sits adjacent to Redfern's thriving café culture, restaurants and King Street in Newtown, making it exceptionally well-connected to inner-Sydney amenities on foot.
Eveleigh falls under postcode 1430 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Newtown electorate.
