About Florina
Florina is a remote pastoral locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 60 kilometres southeast of Katherine in the Katherine region. The locality spans a vast 1,411 square kilometres of tropical savanna landscape — typical of the NT's dry interior — characterised by red rock escarpments, open eucalyptus woodland, and seasonal watercourses. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 118 residents, reflecting the sparse settlement pattern of this remote cattle country. Florina falls within the federal electorate of Lingiari and the NT Legislative Assembly electorate of Katherine.
Life in Florina is centred on the large pastoral stations that manage cattle across the locality's extensive territory, and residents here live the self-reliant, wide-horizon existence that defines remote Top End pastoralism. Katherine — the nearest major centre, approximately 60 kilometres away — provides schools, a hospital, supermarkets, and essential government services, and functions as the hub for the entire Katherine region. The Florina area's dramatic savanna landscapes, proximity to Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, and the abundant birdlife and wildlife of the Top End make it a remarkable place to live for those drawn to remote Australia. The region experiences the NT's characteristic 'wet' and 'dry' seasons, with monsoonal rains transforming the landscape each summer.
Florina falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
