About Gairdner
Gairdner is a small farming town in the Shire of Jerramungup within the Great Southern region of Western Australia, covering an expansive 974.5 square kilometres. With a population of 105 residents, it sits along the South Coast Highway between Jerramungup and Boxwood Hill, roughly 180 kilometres north-east of Albany. The town was established in the 1950s when the surrounding area was opened for agricultural settlement by the state government, and its primary school — the first building on the townsite — was built in 1960.
The local economy is centred on broadacre farming, predominantly wheat and other cereal crops suited to the region’s Mediterranean climate. Gairdner is named after the nearby Gairdner River, which was charted by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe during an expedition in 1848. Jerramungup, approximately 30 kilometres to the west, serves as the nearest service centre with a general store, school, and community facilities. The region’s open agricultural landscapes and proximity to the south coast beaches near Bremer Bay attract those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle far from the city.
Gairdner falls under postcode 6337 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
