About Glossop
Glossop is a small town in South Australia's Riverland region, situated approximately 8 kilometres west of Berri and 7 kilometres east of Barmera, within the Berri Barmera Council local government area. Established as a soldier settlement area after World War I and gazetted in 1921, the town was named in honour of Admiral John Glossop, who commanded HMAS Sydney when it sank SMS Emden in 1914. With a 2021 Census population of 919, Glossop is a modest agricultural community set among the vineyards and horticultural blocks of the mid-Riverland.
The Riverland's warm, dry climate and proximity to the Murray River make the Glossop area well suited to viticulture, citrus, and stone fruit production, with irrigated orchards and vineyards forming much of the surrounding landscape. Residents have ready access to the services and amenities of nearby Berri — including supermarkets, schools, a hospital, and the Berri Barmera leisure centre — while Mildura in Victoria is around an hour's drive east. The area appeals to those connected to the agricultural industry and people seeking affordable rural living in one of South Australia's most productive food and wine regions.
Glossop falls under postcode 5344 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
