About Loveday
Loveday is a small locality in the Riverland region of South Australia, situated approximately 6 kilometres south-west of Barmera and 30 kilometres north-west of Loxton, within the Berri Barmera Council local government area. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 655 across a 62 square kilometre area, with a median household income of around $42,800, consistent with the agricultural and regional character of the Riverland. The locality lies close to the Murray River and its associated lagoons, surrounded by the irrigated orchards and vineyards that define this fertile stretch of South Australia.
Loveday carries significant historical weight — during the Second World War, the area housed the largest internment camp complex in Australia, holding up to 5,300 civilian prisoners at its peak, a history commemorated through heritage interpretations in the area. Today Loveday has a very different character, popular for recreation and adventure through the Loveday 4x4 Park, a destination for off-road enthusiasts seeking challenging terrain. The nearby Moorook Game Reserve and Loveday Lagoons offer outstanding birdwatching, fishing, and camping opportunities amid the Murray River's iconic red gum and wetland landscapes.
Loveday falls under postcode 5345 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
