About Katarapko
Katarapko is a largely uninhabited locality in South Australia's Riverland region, encompassing approximately 9,500 hectares of the Murray River National Park between the towns of Loxton and Berri. The locality takes its name from Katarapko Creek, a Murray River anabranch that winds through the floodplain and mallee scrub, creating a rich mosaic of wetland and woodland habitats. It is one of the most ecologically significant sections of the Murray River National Park, protecting river red gums, black box woodland, and floodplain wetlands important to local biodiversity.
Katarapko is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts rather than a residential community. Visitors come for camping, canoeing, fishing, birdwatching, and bushwalking along trails such as the Ngak Indau Wetland Trail, the Craggs Hut Walk, and the Kai Kai Nature Trail. The area is managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, with designated campsites situated along the Murray River, Eckerts Creek, and Katarapko Creek. The closest service towns are Loxton (south) and Berri (north), both within easy driving distance.
Katarapko falls under postcode 5343 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
