About Grassy
Grassy is a small coastal locality on the southern end of King Island, in Tasmania's remote Bass Strait. Situated about 25 kilometres south-east of Currie — the island's main township — Grassy had a population of around 121 at the 2021 Census. The area was historically shaped by the King Island Scheelite mine, which operated for much of the twentieth century and defined the character of the settlement. Today Grassy retains a tight-knit, end-of-the-world atmosphere that draws sea-changers and those seeking an escape from mainland life.
Grassy offers a surprisingly rich natural environment for such a small community, with a little penguin rookery near its safe harbour and platypus spotting at the Upper Grassy Dam. A service station, supermarket, and a handful of shops and restaurants serve residents and passing visitors. The area supports a campus of Ballarat Clarendon College, and the wider King Island economy relies on beef and dairy farming, fishing, kelp harvesting, and tourism. For those who value isolation, rugged coastal scenery, and authentic island life, Grassy is one of Tasmania's most distinctive addresses.
Grassy falls under postcode 7256 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
