About Naracoopa
Naracoopa is a small coastal village and locality on the east coast of King Island, situated in Bass Strait midway between Victoria and mainland Tasmania, within the King Island municipality. Located approximately 26 kilometres east of Currie — the island's main administrative centre — the locality covers just 4.26 square kilometres and recorded a population of 91 residents in the 2021 Census. The name Naracoopa is an Aboriginal word meaning good and has been in use since 1914, reflecting the long history of settlement on this sheltered part of the island.
Naracoopa is known for its sheltered beach, historic jetty, and relaxed seaside character, attracting holiday-makers seeking the famous King Island lifestyle of fresh seafood, renowned dairy produce, and unspoiled coastal scenery. The village has holiday accommodation and a small number of local amenities, while the broader King Island offers premium beef, cheeses, and the Kelp Industries factory — all renowned nationally. King Island is accessible only by air, with Rex Airlines and Sharp Airlines operating flights from Melbourne and Essendon airports to King Island Airport near Currie, making Naracoopa an accessible but genuinely island retreat.
Naracoopa falls under postcode 7256 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
