About Greta
Greta is a small rural locality in the Rural City of Wangaratta in north-eastern Victoria, situated approximately 24 kilometres south of Wangaratta and around 243 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. Covering around 41 square kilometres of undulating country east of Benalla, the locality recorded a population of 86 at the 2021 Census. The area falls within the broader Ovens Valley region and reflects the character of Victoria's pastoral north-east, with farming properties and open rural scenery.
Greta holds significant historical importance as the childhood home of Ned Kelly, Australia's most famous bushranger, whose family settled here in the 1860s. Kelly's remains were reinterred at the Greta Cemetery on 20 January 2013, fulfilling his wish to be buried at his family's home. The locality sits on the Ned Kelly Touring Route, attracting visitors interested in the Kelly legend and the region's colonial history. Wangaratta, the nearest major town, provides schools, shops, healthcare, and transport connections, while the surrounding King Valley wine country and High Country offer recreational opportunities for residents seeking an active rural lifestyle.
