About Greta West
Greta West is a small rural locality in north-east Victoria, situated approximately 236 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and around 24 kilometres south-west of Wangaratta, within the Rural City of Wangaratta local government area. With a population of 157 at the 2021 census, the locality is sparsely settled and characterised by open pastoral land, grazed properties, and the picturesque foothills of the Victorian Alps. Its postcode is shared with the adjacent locality of Greta, and the two communities together form part of the historic Kelly Country region.
Greta West carries historical significance as Ned Kelly, Australia's most famous bushranger, is known to have lived in the area for a period, and the surrounding landscape of creeks, rivers, bushland, and mountains echoes the pioneering era. The township was settled in the 1890s, with a post office operating from 1892 until 1994. Residents rely on nearby Glenrowan and Moyhu for basic amenities, while Wangaratta — about a 30-minute drive away — provides a full range of shops, schools, medical services, and rail connections to Melbourne.
Greta West falls under postcode 3675 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
